چکیده

0173 For disease outbreak detection, the public-health community has historically relied on the watchful eyes of doctors and other health-care workers, who have reported individual cases or clusters of cases of particular diseases to healthcare and other authorities. The increased availability of electronic health-care data, however, raises the possibility of more automated and earlier outbreak detection and subsequent intervention. Besides diagnoses of known diseases, pre-diagnostic syndromic indicators— such as the primary complaints of patients coming to the emergency room or calling a nurse hotline—are being collected in electronic formats and could be analyzed if suitable methods existed. Martin Kulldorff and colleagues have been developing such methods, and now report a new and very fl exible approach for prospective infectious disease outbreak surveillance. Their method, which they call the “space–time permutation scan statistic,” is an extension of a method called scan statistic. All previously developed scan statistics require either (i) a uniform population at risk (with the same number of expected disease cases in every square kilometer), (ii) a control group (such as emergency visits not due to the disease of interest), or (iii) other data that provide information about the geographical and temporal distribution of the underlying population at risk, such as census numbers. The new method, because of a different probability model, can be used for the early detection of disease outbreaks when only the number of cases is available. It also corrects for missing data and makes minimal assumptions about the spatiotemporal characteristics of an outbreak. To make it

Early Detection of Dysentery Outbreaks by Cumulative Sum Method Based on National Surveillance System Data in 1393-1396

Background and Objectives: Correct and timely detection of the outbreaks of diseases with a short incubation period is of great importance in the health system. The aim of this study was to determine the detection of dysentery outbreaks using the cumulative sum method.   Methods: This time series study was conducted using the data of the National Surveillance System between 2014 and 2017. Surveillance for foodborne disease outbreaks in Iran, 2006-2011

Background: The outbreaks of foodborne diseases is a major health problem and occur daily in all countries, from the most to the least developed. This study is the first report of foodborne outbreaks in Iran that carried out from 2006 to 2011. Methods:  A retrospective, longitudinal study carried out using foodborne disease national surveillance system data from 2006-2011, which have been re...

Skin mamfestation of monkey pox: A review

The current monkeypox outbreak reawakens the concern that poxviridae have a high potential for zoonotic spillover and causing a pandemic. Much fieldwork and research have been done by health care and public health workers in Africa during previous human outbreaks, and their knowledge should inform our global response to the current outbreak. However, unusual clinical presentations now have pote...

Mixture Likelihood Ratio Scan Statistic for Disease Outbreak Detection

Early detection of disease outbreaks is of paramount importance to implementing intervention strategies to mitigate the severity and duration of the outbreak. We build methodology that utilizes the characteristic profile of disease outbreaks to reduce the time to detection and false positive rate. We model daily counts through a Poisson distribution with additive background plus outbreak compon...

A Space–Time Permutation Scan Statistic for Disease Outbreak Detection

BACKGROUND The ability to detect disease outbreaks early is important in order to minimize morbidity and mortality through timely implementation of disease prevention and control measures. Many national, state, and local health departments are launching disease surveillance systems with daily analyses of hospital emergency department visits, ambulance dispatch calls, or pharmacy sales for which...

ارزشیابی عملکرد الگوریتم میانگین متحرک وزن داده شده نمایی در شناسایی طغیان های آنفلونزا در ایران

Background: Timely response to influenza outbreaks using Influenza like illness (ILI) data is one of the most important priorities for public health authorities. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of the Exponentially Weighted Moving Average (EWMA) for timely detection of influenza outbreaks in Iran using simulated approaches from January 2010 to December 2015. Methods: Simu...
